Common side effects may include discomfort at the infusion site, lightheadedness, or a warming/flushing sensation during the infusion. Rarely, hypotension (low blood pressure) may occur. Report any abnormal symptoms to your healthcare practitioner.
Common effects of intravenous magnesium include a warming or flushing sensation on the chest, pelvic area, or face, which is usually not unpleasant for the patient. Calcium may have similar effects.
Magnesium can potentially lower blood pressure, leading to rare instances of hypotension. If abnormal sensations occur, the patient should inform the healthcare practitioner as it may indicate the onset of hypotension due to rapid magnesium infusion. In such cases, treatment should be discontinued until symptoms subside (typically within 10-30 seconds).
Reactions vary among recipients, and for initial treatment, a dose of 500-1,000 mg of magnesium is recommended, especially for elderly patients. Reactions typically manifest within the first 10-30 seconds, and subsequent adjustments can be made based on patient tolerance.
The thiamine carries a slight risk of arrhythmias, mainly in combination with magnesium.
Excess vitamins can increase excretion, and patients with kidney issues may require modified treatment compared to those with healthy kidneys. Healthcare providers should adjust treatment accordingly.
